~ Berserkergangr ~

I fight, I measure my strength and skill against other warriors, and, during all this madness that ensues, I get this rush in my blood, this fantastic energy! It all feels so... empowering, I feel so alive! I feel like I could simply take on anything right now! I could take on the entire world!”
(Thurisaz. The Raider)
____________________________________________________________

This is my entry for :iconoc-training: 's eighth task: Anger. The task fits Hakon like a glove - since, as you know, he is a berserker warrior.

Outgoing and friendly though he is in agreeable company, Hakon can be impulsive and fiery once he sets his on something, and he is an idealistic man who would fight fiercely for a cause he deems honourable - be it a duel to prove his worth, a raid in a foreign land to bring him glory or the war against King Olaf Tryggvason's brutal attempts to root out paganism from Norway*. He is a Berserker, which is, in my novel Sons of Disobedience, a member of a secret society (understood as a Männerbund) of pagan warriors with unusual battle practices. From the eyes of the enemy, Hakon is a frightening opponent.

* Hakon's greatest dream is to liberate Norway from King Olaf's tyranny - check out Ithilloth's amazing illustration of it:

More of Hakon:
Thurisaz by HelevornArt Hakon: Guess Who by HelevornArt Hakon the bold by HelevornArt Alfheim by HelevornArt  Thurisaz. The Raider      Hakon slammed the warrior's head into the pile of wooden logs by the house, until he remained there unmoved. Another soldier rushed upon him with raised sword. Hakon's shield parried the blow, shoving the man aside, pushing him back stormily, his sword slashing at him unrelenting until the man fell on his knees, eyes filled with horror. So Hakon drove the blade through his chest. But then, another man – a peasant, limping but determined and with a despaired hate in his distorted countenance - rushed upon him from the storehouse behind, striking with a studded club at his back. Hakon bent to dodge the hit, so the studs grazed his armour but were not driven through it entirely. He grunted and turned halfway with shield raised to block the second hit, swinging his blade at the peasant's thigh, pummeling the club out of his hand and grappling him by the shoulder to strike his helmet in the man's bare head, leaving him collapse in the dirt.

I really love this! Like- oh wow is it gorgeous! The blend of Hakon's determined face with that of a snarling beast--- I love it all!

Hakon being bold still, hahaha, I can see how he would fight for what he sees as necessarily noble and honorable.

Thank you for the awesome comment, I'm happy you like this so much! Haha yes he sure is bold and determined, he never says no to a challenge and he does follow his honour code (whether that code is truly noble and honourable is a whole other thing, of course :P)

Haha- Not at all a problem--- But I truly do like this concept! It just blends so perfectly with his fierceness and that of the creature's that matches Hakon's determination!
Well, he fights for what he believes!

In my novel and stories I wanted to portray what "going berserk" means for different characters, and how much they transform in terms of power and control. It's not a fantasy thing, it's rather psychological - they don't turn into bears and such, just lots of determination, personal reasons (revenge, hatred, fanaticism, fear), rituals and a touch of hallucinogenic substances :P Hakon has just the right dose of everything, but I have other characters that struggle with staying in control and not doing things they may regret afterwards.

Oh that's flat-out cool! I like that concept a lot. It's not often you hear or see of such a thought- I mean people often go some other route with it that just somehow makes little to no sense, but that thought is neat.
So it's more of what the person themselves see and how they react to things, that's their "Berserk".

I found it rather difficult to write something down for the round 7 critique.
I've been looking at your pictures of Hakon,
There isn't anything I can say about style and anatomy, there both great.

Altho I did notice color is not really present.
That doesn't mean it's a bad thing, but, as I sometimes do with my photography,
leaving (or in this case adding since it's a drawing) color, even minimalistic as one color
on a small spot, can add a lot to a picture.
For example in this picture a slight coloring of red in the Iris could add nicely to the feeling of rage.

On a lil' side note, I really love this picture.
you managed to show the consumption by rage pretty well.

You're right, I'm trying to introduce more colour into my drawings lately, I'm experimenting a bit to see which medium suits me best.

Thank you for the suggestion and the comment! And yes, I like the idea of red in the iris, that would look very berserker-like! ^^

This looks amazing! I love how it looks like the jaws around him are swallowing him, his rage swallowing him up and replacing his reason and mind with mad rage. This is a really good illustration of not just the anger but his Berserking typically works, which is so neat! Awesome job!! :)

Also I was wondering, in your story are the events based off of actual historic events? I don't know too much about the history of Norway so I was curious. :)

Thank you for the great comment! :D Glad I could portray the rage in drawing as well (after having described it in my novel/ stories a few times).

My novel takes place during Norway's conversion to Christianity under the rule of King Olaf Tryggvason, who was brutal in his measures undertaken to eliminate paganism. This much is true, and Olaf even appears as a character at certain points in the novel (as well as some other minor historical figures). The part with the Berserkers isn't connected to these particular historical events, but I did get inspiration from the sagas when creating them (they are as "real" in my story as they appear in the sagas, so no supernatural stuff added), just that I made them the representatives of the pagan resistance. Thanks for your interest :D

You're welcome! It looks quite amazing!

Thanks for the details, it's always so interesting to learn more about the stories that OCs are from.
It's especially interesting that your story is Historical Fiction, I think that's a rare genre for artists
and writers on DA to explore. I feel like they usually gravitate to fantasy and science fiction, as well
as modern fiction. I've only come across a few Historical Fiction writers, very cool.

Yes, you're right, I also noticed that! Fantasy and science fiction are cool in their way, but I especially enjoy seeing how writers use history in creative ways, so I'd love to find more historical fiction here ^^

I think people tend to do that because it gives them complete creative freedom. I think what you do is more admirable since you have to work within set perimeters and that's a lot more difficult than making everything up. It would be neat to see more historical fiction though. :)

Yeah, I can't wait too :O I have two ideas - a serious and a funny one, but both require LOT of work and probably a comic again. :lmao: (I'm not sure I will manage to meet the deadline with those ideas AND vacationing next week AND being homeless in September. :XD: But shh, I will think of something!)

Wow that sounds like a lot of excitement coming up for you! (even the homelessness :O - you'll be fine though, right?) Have fun on your vacation! :D

Best way to avoid missing a deadline due to vacation is to finish the stuff beserker-mode before departing :lmao:

Don't worry, I'm going to live at friends and family. Living in backpack is tons of fun indeed, two years ago I spent this way whole summer :P

I hope so, that's how I try to comfort myself too at least :P Well, I think his eyes are too big and round here compared to the other drawings, but this does amplify the expression of rage so I guess I'll leave it like this or maybe I'll modify it if it bugs me too much xD .

I made his eyes a bit smaller, but it doesn't look much better. Guess it's the shape not the size, they have to be narrower. Oh well, I'll try editing the drawing when I feel like taking the risk xD
