"Other men don't even bother with their women, but I wish I could talk to you sometimes, have your support, do things as husband and wife; but even that is useless with you... What's your problem? Why can't you be normal? Why?"
He caught her chin, forcing her to look at him.
„Well? Speak, say something, God damn it!"
At his angered tone, Merwyn wished she could answer and tried to gather her thoughts, but the words simply slipped away. He sighed in irritation and released her.
"It is useless. It is as if I had wedded a mute. If God made you like this, I cannot undo it..."

This is the Earldorman of Northumbria*, England!
He is the husband of Merwyn (who is 26 years younger than him), father of Aidan and Aedgar (he also middle son called Edmund, who is a minor character and an asshole - three guesses who he takes after! ^^). The Earldorman is also the rival of Halvor 'Halfdan' Einarsson in his love for Merwyn and also in his political endeavours (Halvor being Merwyn's lover and a spy for the Danish king
).
He is a severe and conservative man, domineering and always demanding the last word in every situation. He is very preoccupied with his image as a strong and righteous leader. He is a pragmatic and unimaginative man, and, for these reasons, he has trouble understanding his wife Merwyn and he treats her with contempt, being even abusive at times. This situation pushes her into depression and into a forbidden affair with the Danish merchant Halvor.
*The Earldorman is my fictional character, appearing in my novella Merwyn and in my novel Sons of Disbedience. Interesting fact: I never mention his first name in my stories. This is mainly for historical reasons, because I didn't want to invent such an intricate family story for a real historical political leader.

Gosh, he does look unpleasant! You can really see how much older than Merwyn he is...And his eyes are very unpleasant. Somehow to me Aedgar seems like a more positive (and much handsomer) version of him...like the sombre, cool and judgemental attitude has some positive aspects in the case of Aedgar but adds to everything wrong about the Earldorman. Also, It's an interesting idea that you do not include his name. I have a similar problem - I don't want to make up stuff about existing characters...but as the stories are set in historical times (albeit with fantastical elements) and I want them to be accurate, I do want all the historical figures to be correct. What a dilemma!
